DISNEY DROPS FIRST ‘STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI’ TRAILER

Walt Disney Co.’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” his theaters on Dec. 15
Walt Disney Co. DIS, +0.14%  dropped a teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” during its Star Wars Celebration event on Friday.
“The Last Jedi,” one of the most anticipated films of 2017, picks up where 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” left off and is scheduled for release on Dec. 15.

The last two films in the “Star Wars” galaxy, 2015’s “The Force Awakens” and last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” were the highest-grossing films in consecutive years. “The Force Awakens,” which follows the original trilogy’s storyline, pulled in $2.1 billion worldwide in 2015. Last year, Disney’s first one-off film “Rogue One” earned $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.
“The Last Jedi” will likely contend with two other Disney films, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” for the top-grossing film of the year. While the “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel hits theaters May 5, “Beauty and the Beast” has already made a strong case at the box office, racking up more than $1 billion worldwide in four weeks in theaters.
